  • Perch-shaped, gray-blue with black spots on the rear of their bodies
  • Juveniles are bi-colored, blue-gray fronts and brassy orange rears
  • Reach 12 inches in length, mature at 5 1/2 in and 2yrs of age

Range

  • Abundant to common southern California, occasional central California

Habitat

  • Inhabit shallow reefs and rocky areas
  • Typically swim in open water, well above the bottom
  • Find shelter in rocky cracks, crevices and other recesses at night
  • Often in large aggregations or schools

Diet

  • Feed on zooplankton

Interesting Facts

  • Females are oviparous. Spawning occurs in summer/fall
  • During breeding season, males clean nest sites and guard eggs until they hatch
